4.1 Agriculture occupies an important place in the economy of the state. The share of Agriculture and allied sectors in the Gross State domestic Product (at 1999-2000 prices) for the year 2010-11 as per Advanced estimates stands at 20.59%. On the other hand nearly 70% of the population in the state derives its lively-hood directly or indirectly from the agriculture sector.

4.2 This chapter contains tables regarding pattern of land utilization, pattern of

operational holdings, area under different food and non-food crops, production and

yield rate of crops etc. This chapter also contains tables on agricultures index

numbers, distribution of fertilizers etc. Data on number of tractors and other

agricultural implements are also available. The primary sources of agriculture

statistics are the Agriculture Statistics Returns and the crop forecast prepared by the

Revenue Department. The concepts and definitions used are the same as prescribed

by the Union Ministry of Agriculture. Some specific terms/items appearing in this

section are briefly defined below.

4.2.6 Land under miscellaneous tree crops, groves etc. This constitutes the cultivable land which is not included in net area sown but is put to some agricultural uses. For example, the land under thatching grasses, bamboo bushes and other groves for fuel etc. are not included under orchards fall under the category.

4.2.7 Cultural Water Land. This includes lands available for cultivation irrespective of the fact whether they have been taken up for cultivation or not or taken up for cultivation at once but not cultivated during the current year and the last five years or more in succession for one reason or the other. Such lands may either be fallow or covered with shrubs are jungles which are not put to any use. These may be assessed or un assessed and may be in isolated blocks or within cultivated holdings. Land once cultivated but not cultivated for five years in succession is also included in this category at the end of five years.

4.2.8 Fallow lands other than current fallows. This includes all lands which were taken up for cultivation but are temporarily out of cultivation for a period of not less than one year and not more than five years.

4.2.9 Current follows Cultivable area kept fallow during current agricultural year. Any seeding Area in the current agricultural year not cropped in the same year is also treated as current fallow.

4.2.10 Net area sown. Area with crops and orchards, counting the area sown morn once in the same sown more than once in the same year, only once The above definition is elaborated as follows:

The net area sown is defined as the difference between the total geographical area of all plots of land of the holding and the sum of the areas of land under (1) forest (2) barren& uncultivable wastes (3) put to non- agricultural uses, (4) culturable wastes (5) Permanent pastures and other grazing lands, (6) miscellaneous tree crops excluding orchards and (7) all types of fallow lands.

4.2.11 Total cropped area. Total cropped area represents the total area covered with crops i.e. the sum total of area covered by all the individual crops. The area sown with crops more than once during the same year are counted as separate areas for each crop.

4.2.12 Area sown more than once, it inclu des the area on which crops the cultivated more than

once d uring the agriculture year and is obtained by deducting the net area sown from

the total cropped area.

4.2.13 Land use Statistics Table NO. 4.00 and 4.01 provide information on Land use Statistics. While table no. 4.00 presents time series data on land use statistics, table no. 4.01 highlights district wise details for 2017-18 it needs mention that from the year 2007-08 land utilization statistics given details of marshy & water logged land, land under still water and land under social forestry. Land use statistics is available for 2417 thousand hectares. overthe year land use statistics has not undergone any significant change and indicate tight utilization. The total reporting area as per revenue papers is 2417 thousand hectares for the year 2017-18 which is divided into the following live broad categories as per the concepts and definitions prescribed by the Union Ministry of Agriculture.

4.2.14 Area not available for cultivation: As per the figure for 2017-18 area not available for cultivation accounts for 561 thousand hectares constituting 23.21% of the reporting area figures. The category consists of 251 thousand hectares (10.43%) falling under land put to non agricultural uses and 303 Thousand hectares (12.54%) under Barren & uncultivable land, 6 thousand hectares (0.25%) is land under still water, marshy and waterlogged category which is negligible proportion.

4.2.15 Other uncultivable land: Other uncultivable land excluding fallow lands constitutes 12.99% of reporting area with 314 thousand hectares. Out of which land under miscellaneous tree crops constitutes 59 thousand hectares (2.44%) permanent pastures other grazing lands with 108 thousand hectares (4.47%) and 139 thousand hectares (5.75%) is the cultivable waste land and 8 thousand hectares (0.33%) is social forest.

4.2.16 Follow land 131 thousand hectares (5.42%) are fallow lands comprising of 26 thousand hectares (1.1%) fallow land other than current fallows.

4.2.17 Forest Land : Forest land constitutes 27.27% with 659 thousand hectares.

4.2.18 Net Area Sown : 752.37 thousand hectares is the net area sown. This indicates that proportion of area under agriculture in the state was 31.13% for the year 2017-18.

Area sown more than once costitutes 54.88% of the net area sown for the year 2017- 18

4.2.19 Agricultural census 2010-2011 has recorded 1449 thousand agricultural holding with

an area of 895 thousand hectares, thus making the average holding size of 0.62

hectares

for wheat. Average yield of principal crops (Rice, Maize and wheat) is given in table

4.07.
