‘An Outline of Agricultural Situation in Andhra Pradesh’ is being released every year immediately after the closure of the Agricultural year.

It gives a broad sketch of the Agricultural Scenario that prevailed in the State. It covers the seasonal conditions, Area, Productivity and Production of Principal Crops, Land Utilisation details and other information relating to Agricultural Statistics.

The present report for 2007-2008 is the 33rd of the series. In this report, additional information pertaining to time series data on Rainfall Statistics, Area, Productivity and Production of Principal Crops, Crop calendar giving the pattern of sowings and harvest of different crops, category-wise number and area of operational holdings etc. are also incorporated broadening the scope of the report.

I hope that this new version of the report will be found useful to be research scholars, administrators, and others interested in Agricultural Statistics.

I appreciate the sincere efforts of the Officers and staff of Agricultural Section in bringing out this publication in record time.

AN OUTLINE OF AGRICULTURAL SITUATION IN ANDHRA PRADESH DURING 2007-2008

The role of Agricultural Sector in State Economy is very significant.

The contribution of primary sector including Agriculture, Horticulture and Animal husbandry to the State Gross Domestic Product for the year 2007-08 is 22.18 percent. However, 62.17 percent of the working population are still dependent on Agriculture. Agriculture in Andhra Pradesh is mostly dependent on rainfall. Monsoon and seasonal conditions play a major role in the Agricultural Production. The proportion of area under Agriculture is 49.3 percent which is higher than the national level proportion of 40.4 percent. The Gross Irrigated Area is 46.3 percent of Gross Area sown in the State.

1. AREA AND SEASONAL CONDITIONS 2007-08:

1.1 The seasonal conditions during the year 2007-2008 on the whole were satisfactory. During the South -West monsoon period, the State received excess rainfall of 20 percent against normal . However, North-East Rainfall was deficient by 27 percent. As compared to normal rainfall, the overall rainfall for the year was 15 percent excess. During the year 2007-08 an average rainfall of 1080 mm was recorded as against the normal rainfall of 940 mm. and thereby showing an excess of 15 percent.

4.1 Cropping Intensity:

Cropping intensity is one of the indices for assessing the efficiency of agriculture sector. The cropping intensity i.e. the ratio of gross area sown to net area sown is 1.26 in 2007-2008 and it was 1.26 during 2006-2007. The level of cropping intensity moves in consonance with the behaviour of the monsoon and availability of irrigation water.

5. IRRIGATION :

The gross area irrigated by all sources during the year 2007-2008 is 62.85 lakh hectares. This accounted for 46.3 percent of the gross cropped area as against 47.4 percent during 2006-2007. Source-wise gross area irrigated for the years 2007-2008 and 2006-2007 is given in Table-3.

5.1 The gross area irrigated in the State during the year 2007-2008 increased to 62.85 lakh hectares from 60.69 lakh hectares in 2006-2007, the increase being 3.6 percent and the increase is reflected under Tube wells, Other wells and Other sources of irrigation. The net area irrigated also increased to 46.44 lakh hectares

in 2007-2008 from 44.52 lakh hectares in 2006-2007, the increase being 4.3 percent.

5.2 The details of net area irrigated by different sources of irrigation during the last 5 years for the state as a whole are presented in Annexure-V. Source-wise and District-wise details of area irrigated are presented in Annexure-VI.

5.3. The Gross area irrigated of 62.85 lakh hectares, 61.3 percent was accounted by Rice alone and it was followed by, 6.3 percent by Sugarcane, 5.0 percent by Groundnut, 3.5 percent by Cotton, 5.6 percent by Maize and 2.8 percent by Chillies respectively. The remaining irrigated area was covered by other crops.

The particulars of crop-wise area irrigated by different sources in respect of some important crops are presented in Annexure-VII.

5.4. IRRIGATION INTENSITY:

The Irrigation intensity i.e. the ratio of gross irrigated area to net irrigated area is 1.35 in 2007-2008, where as it was 1.36 in 2006-2007.

6. FOODGRAIN CROPS:

6.1.1 Area and Production of Food grain Crops :

Rice and Jowar are the staple food grain crops which together accounted 58.4 percent of the total area under food grain crops during 2007-2008.

6.2.5. P U L S E S :

Redgram, Bengalgram, Greengram, Blackgram and few other pulses are raised under rainfed conditions in the state. Redgram and Bengalgram are mostly confined to Kharif and Rabi seasons respectively, while the remaining pulses are grown both in Kharif and Rabi seasons. The area under these pulses accounted

for 15.6 percent of the total cropped area in the state during 2007-2008.

Out of 16.97 lakh tones of production of pulses cultivated in the state during 2007-2008. Redgram, Bengalgram,Greengram and Blackgram accounted for 3.02, 9.12, 1.92 and 2.50 lakh tonnes respectively and contributed 97.6 percent of the total pulses production. The area, production and productivity of pulses for the last 5 years are given Table-13.

6.2.6 FRUITS AND VEGETABLES:

The contribution of Horticulture to State Gross Domestic Product is increasing rapidly. The commercial value and consumption of Fruits and Vegetable are also increasing from year to year. Inorder to estimate the yield and production of certain important Fruits and Vegetables, Yield estimation surveys on 12 fruits and vegetable crops are being conducted every year. The crops covered under yield estimates are i) Mango ii) Coconut iii) Cashewnut iv) Lemon v) Batavia vi) Banana vii) Guava viii) Tomato ix) Onion x) Bendi xi)Brinjal and xii)Turmeric. The area, production and productivity of these crops at the State level during 2003-2004 to 2007-2008 are presented in Table-14.
