HYDERABAD – 500 004
P R E F A C E
The present issue of Season and Crop Report for 2004-2005 is the 48
thin the series brought out by this Directorate.
The report presents comprehensive statistical data on Agriculture, rainfall including seasonal conditions, land utilisation, area irrigated by different sources, area, production and productivity of all principal crops, agricultural wages and prices of agricultural commodities for 2004-05. The comparative figures in respect of the area, yield and production of various crops for 2004-2005 with the average of preceding five years are available in this report. It contains information on agricultural inputs such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides and credit distributed to farmers during the year.
The production of Rice, Jowar, Bajra, Maize, Ragi, Korra, Redgram, Greengram, Blackgram, Horsegram, Bengalgram, Chillies, Groundnut, Sesamum, Castor, Sunflower, Cotton, Mesta, Tobacco, Soyabeen and Sugarcane is estimated on the basis of the results obtained through crop cutting experiments. For other crops, the production is estimated by taking into account the yields per hectare obtained through field agency reports. The data have been further highlighted through display of charts wherever necessary.
I wish to record my special appreciation to the staff of Agricultural Statistics services division, specially involved in the field operation.
I hope that the report will be helpful to the Policy makers, Planners, Research workers dealing with Agriculture, climate and environment.
Suggestions for the improvement of this publication is greatfully acknowledged.

5. CROPPING PATTERN:
5.1 Cropping pattern means the proportionate area under different crops during a fasli year. The gross cropped area under all crops has slightly increased to 125.18 lakh hectares during 2004-2005 from 123.66 lakh hectares in 2003-2004, showing an increase of 1.2 percent. The gross area sown, net area sown and production of foodgrains as well as Oil seeds are found normal during the year 2004-2005.
5.2 Table 5.1 shows the area under different crops and their percentage to total cropped
area during 2004-2005 and 2003-04 and the average of preceding 5 years
(1999-2000 to 2003-2004).

Besides food grain crops, Chillies, sugarcane, onions, fruits and vegetables also constitute food crops. Out of 125.18 lakh hectares of total cropped area, 78.83 lakh hectares or 62.9 percent was under food crops.
5.4 AREA UNDER NON-FOOD CROPS:
Non-food crops constitute Fibres, Oil seeds, Tobacco, Dyes, Fodder crops and Green Manure crops. The area under Non-food crops during 2004-2005 is 46.35 lakh hectares constituting 37.1 percent of the total cropped area.
5.5 AREA UNDER FOODGRAIN CROPS:
Out of 125.18 lakh hectares of total cropped area during 2004-2005, 62.66 lakh hectares or 55 percent was accounted for foodgrain crops viz., Rice, Wheat, Maize and Pulses. Rice, Jowar and Maize together accounted for 33.9 percent of the total cropped area in the state during 2004-2005.
5.6 FOODGRAINS PRODUCTION:
The production of foodgrains during the year 2004-2005 is 133.94 tonnes as against 136.97 lakh tonnes in 2003-2004 recording a decrease of 2.2 percent.
Table 5.2 shows the area and production of food grains since 2000-2001 to 2004-2005, along with the average of preceding 5 years (from 1999-2000 to 2003-2004).

6.1 RICE:
6.1.1 Rice is the principal crop extensively cultivated in all the districts of the State both in Kharif and Rabi seasons. It accounted for 24.7 percent of the total cropped area, 71.7 percent of the total foodgrains production during 2004-2005. The area, productivity and production of Rice in the State for the last 5 years are presented in table 6.1.
