• Established by Clauses 5 (2 a & b) of the Aligarh Muslim University Act of 1920 which states that it is one of the Powers of the University to promote oriental and Islamic Studies and give instructions in Muslim Theology and to promote the study of the religion, civilization and culture of India.

• In 1954, the Institute of Islamic Studies was established under the able guidance and profound interest of Prof. Abdul Aleem, who was a renowned scholar in Islamic and Arabic Studies.

• The Institute of Islamic Studies, a research institute with the sole aim to promote the study of Islamic Culture and Civilization, the economic, social and cultural trends in the countries of West Asia and North Africa and Modern Arabic, Persian and Turkish languages and literature.

• As a supplementary activity the institute conducted courses in modern Arabic, modern Persian and modern Turkish.

• It also functions as a teaching department since 1968. Since its inception its permanent cadre consists of the one professor, five Associate Professors and eight Assistant Professors.

• The Department/Institute of Islamic Studies has maintained a high standard of scholarship. It publishes an annual Bulletin (now Journal) of the Institute of Islamic Studies since 1957 and another half-yearly Majalla -i- Uloom -i- Islamiya since 1960.

• The Institute/Department has published more than 60 books and it continues to publish books every year.

• It has also developed a specialized Library of Islamic Studies, which contains more than eighty thousand books and journals.

• The Department, besides imparting instructions in Islamic Studies at B.A.

and M.A. levels, runs Certificate and Diploma courses in Turkish language which is also introduced as subsidiary subject in B.A.

• It also provides research facilities for the awards of M. Phil and Ph. D.

degrees in different thrust areas of Islamic Studies.

• The Department also organizes seminars and conferences at national and international level every year.

• The Department aims at bringing forward modern aspects and issues of the contemporary Muslim world.

• We aim to make the syllabus interactive by using modern tools of utilities.

• We also will organize conferences on contemporaries and issues of the Muslim world.

• Our mission is to create and highlight the true picture of the contributions made by the Muslims world over.

We take pride in speaking about the library of the institute which has beyond doubt no equivalent in the country in view of its richness on Islamic Literature, and a number of rare books. We have more than 80,000 titles in Arabic, English, Persian, Urdu, Turkish, German & French languages. The rarest and the most recent on the subject are collected. Besides, the Library also has large collections of journals published by the finest institutes of the world on Islamic studies.
