It is both my great pleasure and privilege to p r e s e n t t h e Annual Report of 2011-2012.

In accordance with Section 34 of the AMU Act, as amended in 1 9 8 1 . T h i s Annual Report h a s b e e n p r e p a r e d under the direction of the University Executive Council for submission to the Visitor, Chancellor, Central Government and both the Houses of Parliament, through the Executive Council and the University Court.

Since its inception the Aligarh Muslim University has been serving, ceaselessly, for the cause of higher education. This historic institution has played a major role in preserving and enriching the glorious tradition of the composite, multi-faith culture of secular India. All along it has catered, in particular, to the educational aspirations and needs of the Indian Muslims, especially Muslim girls. The AMU Act, as amended in 1981, and legislated by Parliament, has assigned responsibility to AMU to work towards the educational and cultural advancement of the Muslims of India. In pursuance of this goal AMU has already opened centres in Kerala and West Bengal. These will take some time for expansion and consolidation.

Nonetheless, it is worth-reiterating that the

visionary founder of this institution, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (1817-1898) always professed and practised the integrationist view of society in keeping its doors open for everyone, regardless of gender, colour, race, caste or creed affiliations. We will uphold our Founder's dream.

In recognition of our duty to society and our country AMU has been striving, all along, for quality education and academic excellence. In 2011-2012 we scaled new heights in terms of awarding an increased number of M.Phil/Ph.D.

degrees in a wide range of disciplines. There were increased publications by the AMU faculty and we organized and participated in a larger number of conferences and seminars, both national and international. We secured more research projects and grants from prestigious national and international bodies; admitted a larger number of students in myriads of courses, including several new ones. We managed and secured greater financial allocations. The next section “AMU at a glance” provides, in tabulated form, the data showing the progress we have attained in 2011-2012.

Notwithstanding our achievements we are committed to striving for more and substantial accomplishments. For this we have charted out a detailed road map. Salient features of the same are:

To provide high quality education, nutritious meals and comfortable accommodation to our students.

To prepare our students to qualify in competitive exams.

Our thrust will also be on sports, personality development and confidence building activities.

Faculty will be encouraged to upgrade their qualifications and skills so they can

be the vanguard for quality research.

We are determined to achieve not only the above mentioned goals, but also much more in future.

The department of Urdu was established in 1920, the same year that the MAO College became the Aligarh Muslim University. Its greatest contribution besides the development of the Urdu language and literature in the Indian subcontinent is that it has paved the way for different movements in Urdu literature.

One of the distinguishing features of this university is that Urdu is being taught as a compulsory subject from eleventh class to first year of B.A./B.Sc./B.Com.

Also, keeping in view the present day requirements, the department has started professional and job oriented courses in order to make this language market friendly.

P. G. Diploma in Mass Communication (Urdu) and two Urdu Electronic Media Certificate and Diploma level mass communication courses are taught here since the 2007-2008 session.

“Urdu-E-Mualla” society which was established in 1901, provides an excellent platform to the students of Urdu and other departments to improve their literary talent. The Aligarh Magazine which is considered a foremost Urdu magazine in the Indian sub-continent first appeared in 1891 with Allama Shibli Nomani as it's editor. This magazine brings out special issues from time to 6.2.10.Department of Urdu

Persian language and culture on the Indian sub- continent and interaction between the two countries of India and Iran, and on the study of Persian as a means of research in various other fields beyond literature. Enormous literature bearing on the life and conditions of the people of Hindustan - historical works, tazkiras, biographical w o r k s , p o e t i c c o m p o s i t i o n s , w o r k s o n mathematics, astronomy, astrology, art of administration, art of war, medicine etc., have been produced in Persian. Countless papers, Akhbarat, Farmans, Parwanas and manuscripts preserved today in various libraries, museums and the National Archives bear testimony to the fact that Persian was an integral part of India's cultural, social and political system during the medieval period.

The main objective of the Institute is to bring to light this vast material, with vigorous, multi- pronged and interdisciplinary work, in tune with the changed perception of modern day researches, extending far beyond the fields of poetry and literature. The aim of the Projects undertaken is to make forays into other disciplines and fields and to encompass the variety possible in Persian researches and deal with Persian not merely as a tool of literary expression but as a source language used in Medieval India.
