Resources, Linguistic Activation, Neural activation and Reading Direction

14. Project Summary (Not to exceed one page. Please use separate sheet).

The present study attempts to understand how readers achieve such sudden changes in reading direction at the level of eye movements and conscious cognitive reading strategies. This is first comprehensive study of its kind to investigate bidirectional reading text and numeral among Urdu speaking population.

The principle investigator has conducted one small study by using eyetracker Khan et al, 2017. The result showed that high cognitive resource is required for reading of long numerals, as if they were read first on normal right-to-left reading direction which is wrong for numerals in Urdu, followed by a change in reading direction by sequence of regressive saccades, named here as forth-and-back fixation sequence.

Therefore, the current proposed study is an attempt to see nature of cognitive resources and neural underpinning of reading Urdu where reader has to read right to left in case of text reading and right to left for reading numerals.
