Mluence of Temperature on the Diamagnetism of Liquids
(Receiued

1931) Abstract,Magnetic sasceptibilities of a few aliphatic and ammatic liquids and water have h e n investigated at di%erent tempemtares (from m m temperature ta 80aC.), In the case of water, like the o h m t i w s of Piccard, Johner and Cabrem,1 it is found that its ~pecifib diamnpetia uasceptibility inareassa with rise of temperntnre. In the erne of dip- practically na change is obeemed, but the dismaguetism of atornrtim, mad particnhrly nibbenzene, ~ h o m a definite decmse with rim of h p e r s - ture. f t is we11 known that the eromatiw erbibit a s b m g m mqgetic birefringeaca than the aliphatim. Alm tbe magaetio birefriageaeeef a liquid decreases at higher temperatom, bemuse the &mt of is to d i ~ t u r b the molecul~r orlentstion prodad by the magaeticr field. It is therefore snggeeted that the deemwe in the diamwrtism of a h a might also Im due to their different degrees of molwahr orien~atioa m t different temperaturee,
