The International Indian Ocean Expedition has given much stimulus to marine work in Indian Ocean countries. There is special interest in the study of marine plankton with a view 10 understanding areas of high and low productivity. An Indian Ocean Biological Centre at Ernakulam, ncar Cochin, ha.; beell sct up by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research with UNESCO assistance, for receiving and sorting the several hundreds of samples of' plaukton collected with the Indian Ocean landard Net operated hy research ships participating in the Expedition. It is hoped that the bibliography of work relating to planklOn of Indian Ocean preparad by Dr. Prasad will be ustrul to students of marine biology and particularly to those who desire to take up illlcnsive studies on Indian marine plankton.

A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PLANKTON OF THE INDIAN OCEAN

By

R. RAGHU PRAS .- AD

(Ctlliral Jfor;ni' Fishtries Research Substalioll, Eruaklllll1l1) INTRODUCTION

!vbre than a dccadt, back a biqliography of plankton of the western sector of the Tnci0-Pacific region wa compiled by llie staff of the Central )'hrine fi<;hcrics Research Institute and was i!'SlIld as Occasicnal Paper 51 Qf the Indo-Pacific fisheries Council. -Since the puhlication of this, a large numher of papers relating to plankton of llie Indo-Pacific region have appeared and Willi [he commencement of the Indian Ocean Expedition the need for revising the earlier bibli graph)' was keenly felt.

At lhe suggestion or Dr. N. K. Panikkar, DircclCr. Indian Programme of the Indian Ocean E.xpedition, tllC author undcrtook lhe ta~k of preparing a bibliography of planklOn Oflllc lndian Ocean.

111C author is fully awarcofthcmagnitude of the work as well as thc litnitations of tht; presenl compilaLion. No claim is made of having given complete coverage owing to the limited library facilities under which rhis compilation had to be made ancfso it is likely that thrre will be omis- sions, particularly some of the very earty publications and lhose which might have appeared ill some of the obscure journals.

The refcrences are arranged subjectwise and all puhlications dealing with plankton as a whole hay been grouped under 'Gem'ral'. Since some of (he references givcH under the variol1s groups include marc than one group, cross references as far as possible arc given ill the end of the sl'crions.

The allchor is grateful to Dr. S. Jones, Director. Central Marine Fisheries Research InstitlHc for pe1mission to publish this and also ror11is help and advice particularly regarding the section 'Fi~h t.ggs and larvae'. Thanks arc also duC' LO Dr. R. P. Varma -and Shri P. V. Ramachandran Nair ror checking the section 'PhYlOplankters' and Sarvashl'ee K. Renga- r:.tjan an~d Clement Adolph ror help rendered in collecting some of the rc:!ferences. To Dr.~. K. Panikko.r, the author is grateful for arranging the

publication.
