ISSUES – BEACH PROMENADE

Beach promenade and Walkway to Botanical Garden

• Lack of a well-programmed Gandhi statue and Thidal zone.

• The existing walkway is too wide for delineating a proper usage to it.

• The existing seaters are few in numbers and invariably gives a view opposite to the panoramic beach view.

• There are no shade giving structures nor trees on the beach pavement.

• There is no sense of interest or attracting element to the beach side irrespective of the grid layout of the town.

• There is no justifiable space provided or allocated for parking of 4-wheelers and buses on festive days and weekends.

• The shops and other mobile vendors are not provided with an earmarked space for them to carry their business.

• There is no character in the road landscape along the walkway to Botanical Garden.

VISIONS / DESIGN OBJECTIVES:

To and for the purpose of local revitalization, both economical and cultural.

To provide a well-programmed recreational beach area that is more than a monotonous beach road.

To make Puducherry and its Beach Promenade a landmark and an international destination.

The beachfront with its inherent scenic quality has the potential of being inhabited visually and physically. Despite access points from different stretches of the existing grand canal, the intension is to create the sense of direct connection to the beach promenade through water features, public art etc. that have direct visual connection to the beach promenade.

DESIGN STRATEGIES

TO TRANSFORM THE THROUGHWAY INTO A PROMENADE

(48)

Architecture M.Arch

Urban Landscape Design

The imagery of a beach promenade is pressingly necessary and at the same time opportune in combination with the image of the existing heritage architecture and Bharathi park.

A LANDSCAPE OF AMPLE ACTIVITIES Both sports and cultural-oriented

• Biking

• Jogging

• Rollerblading

• Skateboarding

• Walking

• Outdoor Theatrical Performance

• Cultural Festivals

• Funfairs

• Picnicking

Hard / Paved Surfaces

They concentrate primarily on the upper walkway of the proposed pathway. The paved walkway connects areas of different programs. The walkway itself contains activities such as biking, jogging, walking, skateboarding and rollerblading. Ample space is provided along the grand canal for parking.

Soft / Green Surfaces

The intension is to keep and enhance the existing natural quality of the site and its surrounding. Trees are planted alongside walkways to provide shadeThe green park provided are places for relaxation and family-oriented activities. The beachfront becomes a waterfront green walkway , slightly widened to ensure a comfortable place to visually engage with nature.

Built Structures

Light structures are strategically placed within the site area. These structures have similar formal attributes in plan and may be more temporary in nature – in that they may dissembled and reassembled, or even redesigned and rebuilt yearly based on seasonal programs (gift shops, a café with beach view) are also housed in structures of similar principles in form.
