The culture of natural history

(14)

Treks

(15)

After several years

How do we explain this?

(16)

Severe stress in key areas

(17)

Society

(18)

Agents

l A pays B to deliver to A

l A pays B to deliver to C

l Examples Cobbler-Teacher-Tehsildar

Knowledge

Sound and Rigourous

(19)

Ask the scientist

(20)

Everything is known!

l Scientist-corruption, backwardness

l Social Scientist-class, gender and caste

l Economist-market failure

(21)

But is this true?

What is science made up of?

Subject of science

Combustion, nano-electronics Process of science

skills of observation, documentation, argumentation, experimentation

(26)

Markets

(27)

How does it play out

Profits 3,000 crores

Sub-contract 9,000 crores

Salaries 1,500 crores

Transport 1,500 crores

Royalties 900 crores

Marketing 3,000 crores

l Packaged Wafers Rs.

5 for 30gm, Rs 8 for 50gm

l Money going out-

coming in as dole or low prices for rice

(28)

How do we reverse this?

How does a community serve it self better?

Can women of Dahulvalli not make wafers?

Quality, Hygiene-better machines and processes

Trust, confidence, role models Same as what runs community services!

(29)

What runs the modern Big-System?

Elite Agency

Highly productive systems: clever people to operate.

Elite Agents-iconic scientists, innovators, artists

Elite identification

Harvard, MIT, IIT, UPSC

Put In charge of big systems

All benefit!

Branding

Support to mobility

Suspension of discernment

Eventually consumable, part of identity

(30)

In Reality

l

l Wasteful, Unsustainable, inequality wired-in

l Aspirational dysfunction, inimical to community action

l Turns the rest of us into alienated consumers

l Loss of empiricism. Loss of coding and transmission of knowledge. Loss of culture!

(31)

How does a community serve it self better?

l More diverse roles for the familiar

l More give and take across time, more history

l More comprehension

l More practice and culture!

(32)

What to do?

Massive Decentralization right down to taluka level-governance, higher education

l Give people back their language, their shastra and their sahitya and its methods

l Human practices and empathy as the guide to teach social and physical sciences

l Comprehension of the structure of society

l Rehabilitation of the seasons and natural history

l Production of role models

(33)

l The personal-experiential

l The systemic-methodological

l The subject matter-practices

l The mystery resolved-choice!

But there is only one way-Culture as growth

l

l A Human Weakness

l More secure, More certain, less drudgery=agriculture

l Inherent bureaucracy

l Culture of the government servant!

l Allure of the big system

Towards a convivial society

(34)

Re-enchantment-Hard Work
