(126)

Kaur Popli generated a synergy amongst the students by sharing the pictures of a cleanliness drive undertaken by the girl students of Jamia at their hostel. The inaugural session concluded with a pledge taking ceremony of making cleanliness a habit.

After the inaugural session Dr Habeebul Rahman and Mr Sanjay Ingole held a brainstorming session for sustaining cleanliness. The students provided their views regarding different ways in which they can contribute towards making their environment clean. In this session, the students were divided into three subgroups and each group was assigned with a topic. Three topics assigned were: i) sustaining cleanliness in the Department, ii) sustaining cleanliness in the campus and, iii) sustaining cleanliness in Jamia neighbourhood. The student’s brain stormed on the issue and came out with strategies which were also presented with the help of flipcharts.

On 2nd of September, the Students of MA (HRM) and ADPH cleaned the front corridors and classrooms of M. A (HRM) and ADPH under the supervision of their class incharges from 10.00 AM to 12.30 PM. The cleaning of the classrooms was supervised by Prof. Jyoti Kakkar, Dr Intezar Khan and Mr. Sanjay Ingole.

(127)

For M.A. (Social Work) students, the briefing session of the Swatchhta Pakhwara was conducted from 1.00 pm to 1.15 pm on 5th of September 2016 in the seminar room of the Department of Social work. The session was addressed by Head of the Department, Prof Ushvinder Kaur Popli. She made the students aware about the importance of cleanliness in our daily lives emphasizing on the need to make cleanliness a habit and an attitude. Prof Ushvinder Kaur Popli carried on with the spirit of cleanliness through a pledge taking ceremony with the students of M. A. (Social Work) and faculty of department. She also invited suggestions from the students regarding the participation of their parents in the Swachchta Abhiyan.

The inaugural session was carried forward through a brainstorming session for sustaining cleanliness which was conducted by Dr Neelam Sukhramani and Dr Virendra Shahare. Dr Neelam Sukhramani emphasized on the relevance of cleanliness and raised a question on the ways of sustaining the cleanliness drive that is being carried out during Swatchta Pakhwara.

She encouraged students of M. A.(Social Work) to prepare an operational plan with distinct duties delegated to every individual with a delineated task. A number of suggestions emanated out of the student’s discussions included a formation of Cleanliness Student Committee to monitor the sustenance of cleanliness in the department and at university level.

Next, the composition, functions and role of the committee were discussed. The role included monitoring; promotion of culture of cleanliness within campus through nukkad nataks on a recurrent basis, infrastructure creation to ensure cleanliness, maintenance of infrastructure, preparation of a batch to be worn by the members of cleanliness committee etc.

On 6th and 7th of September, the Students of MA (HRM) and ADPH under the supervision of their class respective incharges cleaned the classrooms of M.A (Social Work) Sem I & III, seminar room, room no. 11, office of HOD, committee room, office of department, field work unit , photocopier room and audio visual room. Students and teachers were assigned duties to clean various parts of the department.

(128)

The students of M.A. (Social Work), M.A.(HRM) and ADPH along with their faculty incharges started the cleaning session at 1.00 PM. The students enthusiastically gathered at their respective places and were briefed about the plan of action. Students were provided with brooms, wiper, mops, Colin, dusters etc. They were divided into small groups and each group was assigned different tasks like cleaning of chairs, fans, lights, windows, boards etc. After the dusting was done, the floors were cleaned with water and Phenyl. The students were cooperative and accommodating and most importantly understood the value of team work.

They undoubtedly learnt how they could practically contribute to the Clean India Drive.

September 9 was celebrated as Swachch Day wherein massive cleaning of major area of the department was undertaken.

(129)

Since classrooms and other routine usage areas have already been cleaned on earlier days, Swachch Day included cleaning of BPEL Lab, computer lab and outer area of the department, cleaning of GFATM room/room of guest faculty and adjoining area, seminar library, terrace and stair cases were cleaned. It also included cleaning of department lawns and its front area along with the corridors. All the cleaning activities were under the supervision of the faculty members with the support of the students of the department.

(130)

All the cleaning activities were under the supervision of the faculty members with the support of the students of the department.

The cubicles of the faculty members with the help of respective field work supervisees were cleaned on September 9. The students dusted, cleaned and mopped all the cubicles. The cleaning process was able to weed off a lot of trash in the form of broken furniture, waste papers, books, files etc. The teachers actively worked along to remove the files and papers which were no more required by them.

(131)

The last day of the Swatchhta Pakhwada was marked with the cleaning of the department’s toilets. Despite, it being a routine affair, the concerned staff made it a point to upscale the cleaning process.

(132)

The cleaning process led to learning that it is a continuous process and has to be part of our mind set. Our daily activities must include activities that keep our surroundings clean. The entire programme was a display of good teamwork and engagement of students, faculty members and administrative staff of the department.
