FORENSIC SCIENCE PAPER No.5: Forensic Chemistry and Explosives MODULE No.29: Explosion Process and Affects Interesting Facts
Cockroaches can survive a nuclear explosion.
The scientists subjected German cockroaches to three levels of radioactive metal cobalt 60. After a month, 50% of cockroaches exposed to 1,000 rads were still kicking and around 10% of the 10,000 rad group was alive. The results confirmed that
cockroaches can survive a nuclear.
The nuclear bomb on Hiroshima emitted radioactive gamma rays at strength of around 10,000 rads.
The afterglow of GRB 080319B by gamma-ray burst was the brightest gamma-ray burst afterglow ever observed.

GRB080319B imaged by Swift’s X-ray Telescope (left) and by
Optical/Ultraviolet Telescope (right).
A gamma ray burst (GRB) 080319B occurred which was visible to the naked eye for 30 seconds. This explosion took place 7.5 billion light years away which makes most distant object viewable without a telescope and it was estimated about the equivalent of 10,000 times the Sun’s weight in TNT detonating all at once.

Sir Harold Delf Gillie’s
In the world war 1 the shrapnel used in the explosives or weapons caused facial injuries. The twisted metal shards produced from a shrapnel blast could easily rip a face off. The surgeon Harold Gillies took the task of helping victims and pioneered early techniques in facial
reconstruction.

Description Image
Peak overpressure of 10psi and Maximum wind speed of 294mph may severely damage or demolished reinforced concrete buildings and may killed most of the people.
"Weibull's formula" to determine Overpressure
where:
2410 =constant based on 1 bar
m= net explosive mass calculated using all explosive materials and their relative effectiveness
V = volume of given area

Nitroglycerine dynamite (an explosive) will crystallize after a long period of storage. A sudden temperature difference of a 3 degree can cause these crystals to detonate without warning.

Glossary
A
Armour or Armor- It is a protective covering that is used to prevent damage from being inflicted to an object, individual, or vehicle by direct contact weapons or projectiles, usually during combat, or from damage caused by a potentially dangerous environment or action (e.g., cycling, construction sites, etc.).
B
BLEVE- A boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion (BLEVE) is an explosion caused by the rupture of a vessel containing a pressurized liquid above its boiling point
E
Exothermic- A process or reaction that releases energy from the system, usually in the form of heat, light, electricity, or sound.
F
Fission- Fission is a splitting of something into two parts.
Fusion- Fusion is the process of combining two or more distinct entities into a new whole.

Flash Fire- A flash fire is a sudden, intense fire caused by ignition of a mixture of air and a dispersed flammable substance such as a solid (including dust), flammable or combustible liquid (such as an aerosol or fine mist), or a flammable gas. It is characterized by high temperature, short duration, and a rapidly moving flame front.
I
Impact- the striking of one thing against another; forceful contact; collision:
Incendiary- Incendiary device is a device or attack designed to cause fires.
S
Singe- Is to burn (something) superficially or lightly.
