“Agricultural Statistics at a Glance, Andhra Pradesh 2009—10 ” (Previously called as “An Outline of Agricultural Situation in Andhra Pradesh“) has been prepared on the lines of Agricultural Statistics at a glance being published by Government of India and It is being released every year immediately after the closure of the Agricul- tural year. It gives a broad sketch of the Agricultural Scenario that prevailed in the State. It covers the seasonal conditions, Area, Produc- tivity and Production of Principal Crops, Land Utilisation details and other information relating to Agricultural Statistics.

The present report for 2009-2010 is the 35th of the series. In this report, additional information pertaining to data on Minor Irrigation Census , year wise Population with the growth rate and Number of cultivators and Agricultural laborers, Live Stock Population , Produc- tion of Milk , Eggs and Wool , Fish production and procurement of Rice in the State has been added apart from the time series data on Rainfall Statistics, Area, Productivity and Production of Principal Crops, Crop calendar giving the pattern of sowings and harvest of different crops, category – wise number and area of operational holdings , No. of crops covered under NAIS , No. of connections, connected load and consumption of power under Agriculture, area under high yielding va- rieties and normal areas, production and productivity for important crops are also incorporated broadening this scope of the report.

I hope that this new version of the report will be found useful to the research scholars, administrators, and others interested in Agricul- tural Statistics.

I appreciated the sincere efforts of the Officers and staff of Ag- ricultural Section in bringing out this publication in record time.

4.1 CROPPING INTENSITY:

Cropping intensity is one of the indices for assessing the efficiency of agriculture sector. The cropping intensity i.e. the ratio of gross area sown to net area sown is 1.26 in 2009-2010 and it was 1.26 during 2008 -2009. The level of cropping intensity moves in consonance with the behaviour of the monsoon and availability of irrigation water.

5. IRRIGATION :

The gross area irrigated by all sources during the year 2009-2010 is 57.65 lakh hectares. This accounted for 45.89 % of the gross cropped area as against 48.7 % during 2008-2009. Source-wise gross area irrigated for the years 2009-2010 and 2008-2009 is given in Table-3.

% by Groundnut, 4.2 % by Cotton, 6.0 % by Maize and 2.9 % by Chillies respectively. The remaining irrigated area was covered by other crops.

The particulars of Crop-wise Area Irrigated by different sources in respect of some important crops are presented in Annexure-VII.

5.4. IRRIGATION INTENSITY:

The Irrigation intensity i.e. the ratio of Gross Irrigated Area to Net Irrigated Area is 1.37 in 2009-2010, where as it was 1.39 in 2008-2009.

6. FOODGRAIN CROPS:

Redgram, Bengalgram, Greengram, Blackgram and few other pulses are raised in the state. Redgram and Bengalgram are mostly confined to Kharif and Rabi seasons respectively, while the remaining pulses are grown both in Kharif and Rabi seasons. The area under these pulses accounted for 15.4 % of the total cropped area in the state during 2009-2010. Out of 14.32 lakh tones of production of pulses Produced in the state during 2009-2010.The production under Red- gram, Bengagram, ,Greengram and Blackgram alone accounted for 96.4 % of the total production of pulses. The area, production and productivity of pulses for the last 5 years are given Table-13.

6.2.6 FRUITS AND VEGETABLES:

The contribution from Horticulture sector to State Gross Domes- tic Product is substantially increased. The commercial value and con- sumption of Fruits and Vegetable are also increasing from year to year.

Inorder to estimate the yield and production of certain important Fruits and Vegetables, Yield estimation surveys on 12 fruits and vegetable crops are being conducted every year. The crops covered under yield estimates are i) Mango ii) Coconut iii) Cashewnut iv) Lemon v) Batavia vi) Banana vii) Guava viii) Tomato ix) Onion x) Bendi xi)Brinjal and xii) Turmeric. The area, production and productivity of these crops at the State level from 2005-2006 to 2009-2010 are presented in Table-14.

6.2.7 OIL SEEDS :

Andhra Pradesh is one of the important states in the country to grow oil seed crops like Groundnut, Sunflower and Castor extensively.

The area under oil seeds during 2009-2010 was 21.19 lakh hec- tares which constituted 16.9 % of the total cropped area in the state.

The area under Groundnut alone accounted for 61.4 % of the total area under oil seeds during 2009-2010. Out of 24.18 lakh tonnes of production of oil seeds, Groundnut, Sunflower and Castor accounted for production of 55.4 % of the total oil seed production in the state.
