RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS Inauguration of the Agricultural Research

Information System

The Agricultural Research Information S y s t e m (ARIS) of CMFRI, Kochi was inaugurated by Dr. K. Gopakumar, Deputy Direc- tor General (Fisheries), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi on 4 J a n u a r y 2000.

Harvest of Farm Grown Mussels

Under the research project 'Popularisation and transfer of bi- valve culture technology', mussel culture by raft and rack method was undertaken by two groups of fishermen at Njarakkal with the technical guidance of CMFRI in December 1999. Grown mussels were harvested during the first week of March 2000 and the meat was sold to the Integrated Fish- eries Project (Govt, of India) at the rate of Rs. 57/kg.

Fishermen- Farmers- Industry- Institution

Meet

The XXXIX Fishermen -Farm- ers - Industry- Institution meet on 'Etroplus breeding and culture' was conducted at Kadamakudi on 29 January. More than fifty farmers attended the meet.

Under the adhoc project on 'Studies on the deep scattering layer of the Indian EEZ,' funded by DOD, FORV Sagar Sampada u n d e r t o o k the c r u i s e No. 179 along the East coast. Samples were collected u s i n g Issac Kid

Midwater Trawler (IKMT) from 11 stations, 2 to 21 December.

Exhibition

CMFRI participated in the Golden Jubilee exhibition 'Millen- nium Expo' organised by St. Tho- mas College, Palai, Kottayam Dis- trict during 1-10 J a n u a r y . The CMFRI stall was inaugurated by

Marine Aquarium Show

The Vizhinjam R e s e a r c h Centre of CMFRI participated in the Marine aquarium show which was organised in connection with the flower show at Kanakakunnu Palace, Trivandrum, 22 to 30 January.

A team of 12 Scientists from CMFRI participated in the Asian Fisheries Forum held at CIFA,

Attended the inaugural ses- sion of the meeting on 'Recent trends in small scale fisheries of Kerala' organised by the South In- dian Federation of Fishermen So- cieties, Dept. of Fisheries, Govern- ment of Kerala and the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum and released the publication on 'Census of the artisanal marine fishing fleets in K e r a l a ' Trivandrum, 29 February.

Discussion with the Dean, Fisheries College, Tuticorin re- garding the collaborative p r o - grammes proposed to be under- taken between Tamil Nadu Veteri- nary and Animal Sciences Univer- sity and CMFRI, 9 March.

Participated in the meeting convened by the Secretary (Fish- eries), Govt, of Kerala with regard to taking up of pearl culture at tivities at selected areas along the Kerala Coast, 10 March.

Dr. K. Rengarajan, Senior Sci- entist at Kochi retired on superan- nuation on 28, February. He was graduated from Madras University and joined in CMFRI at Kochi in 1964. He took his M.Sc. in marine biology with first rank from the Annamalai University and Doctoral Degree from Kerala University. He had been to Japan in May 1985 for a three weeks training in Electron Microscopy. He has 23 research papers and two books to his credit.

He was an Associate Editor of JMBA for 15 years and was a mem- ber in the Board of Studies in In- dustrial Fisheries of Cochin Univer- sity of Science and Technology, Ma- r i n e Biology and Coastal Aquaculture of Annamalai University.
