4. SOURCES OF IRRIGATION

Any crop which is irrigated at least once before getting harvested is called as an irrigated crop . Basing on the clarification given in G.O.M.S No 265 of Rev Dept Dt 18.3.92 , the cropped areas are classified as irrigated and Unirrigated areas.

The gap between average yield and the yields of irrigated and un-irrigated tracts is so wide that for proper assessment of production potentialities, it is essential to have separate data for irrigated and un-irrigated areas, according to different sources of irrigation and different crops.

The main sources of irrigation in Andhra Pradesh are canals, tanks, tube-wells and dug wells.

District wise details are available in Detailed table III A1

District wise details are available in Detailed table III A2

Net area irrigated by all sources during 2012-13 was 45.75 lakh hectares as against 50.94 lakh hectares in 2011-12 showing decrease of 10.12 percent.

The net area irrigated during 2012-13 constituted 41.57 percent of net area sown in the State. The net area irrigated by canals and wells constituted 27.65 percent and 57.79 percent respectively during 2012-13.

West Godavari district is at the top with 3.84 lakh hectares of net area irrigated during 2012-13. The source-wise net area irrigated is given in Table-4.1

4.1.4 Other Sources

Other sources classified as lift Irrigation schemes, Springs, Bandams,Kuntas and others not included any where. An area of 1.62 lakh hectares is irrigated under other sources constituting 3.54 percent of the total net area irrigated in the state. The major portion of the area under this head is covered by Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Kurnool, Khammam , East Godavari, Prakasam, Krishna and Mahabubnagar districts accounted for 73.49. percent of the total net area irrigated by other sources in the State, during 2012-13.

Gross Area Irrigated

4.2 Gross area irrigated is the total irrigated area under various Sources and crops during the year this area also accounts the area irrigated more than once also during the same year. The Gross area irrigated during 2012-13 decreased to 62.68 lakh hectares from 67.85 lakh hectares in 2011-12, the decrease being 7.62 percentage. The decrease is reflected under Canals, Tanks and other Sources. The Gross Area Irrigated under Canals, Tanks and other sources is decreased by 24.02% , 12.76% and 7.09 % respectively during the Year 2012-13 as compared to the previous year. i.e 2011-12, where as area under wells increased to 38.41 lakh hectares from 37.56 lakh hectares during the previous Year i.e 2011.12 the increase being 2.28% when compared to Previous Year.
