Professor V. G. Das Director, Dayalbagh Educational Institute

“It is not a big University or big building or larger number of teachers or larger number of departments which raises the status of a University. It is the quality of the work that makes a University great.”

Revered Professor M.B. Lal Founder Director, Dayalbagh Educational Institute

Historical Perspective

“Education, more education, education made perfect is the only panacea for our country’s ills and evils. With more and real education I daresay we can easily raise the general level of intelligence of its teeming millions, create, in its future generations, the habit of clear and deep thinking and of appreciating new values that turn the acquisitive impulse of its people from its present direction to the direction of truth.”

Revered Sir Anand Sarup Kt., August Founder of Dayalbagh

These words convey the unshakable faith in education as a means for inculcating the ideal of better worldliness upheld by the August Founders of Dayalbagh and the D.E.I. The aim of the Institute’s founding fathers was to evolve the superman of tomorrow. In pursuance of these lofty ideals, the genesis of education in Dayalbagh was the opening of the Radhasoami Educational Institute (R.E.I.) on January 1, 1917, by Sir Anand Sarup Kt., the fifth Revered Leader of the Radhasoami Faith. From its modest beginning, the nucleus not only grew and got divided but also spawned new institutions in response to the changing and evolving needs of society.

A significant development of far-reaching consequence in the history of education at Dayalbagh was the establishment of D.E.I. as a Registered Body in 1973, which integrated and brought under one umbrella all the educational institutions of Dayalbagh. In 1975, the Institute formulated an innovative and comprehensive educational policy with the mission objective of evolving a “complete man” which received approbation from the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the University Grants Commission (UGC), and the Ministry of Education and Culture (Department of Education). On May 16, 1981, the Government of India declared D.E.I., Agra, comprising the D.E.I. Women’s Training College, R.E.I. Degree College, and D.E.I.

Engineering College, Dayalbagh, a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act. Accordingly, the three erstwhile colleges ceased to exist as separate entities and began functioning as the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Education, Engineering and Science from the academic session 1981-82. The Institute has since been accorded the Membership of the Association of Indian Universities.

On the outskirts of the historic city of Agra, the campus is situated in idyllic surroundings, away from the din and noise of the city. Nestled between lush green fields, it provides an excellent academic setting which is in harmony with nature. This, along with a simple, disciplined and principled life, undoubtedly contributes to the strength of the social, moral and spiritual fibre of the Institute's educational system.

Unique and Innovative Education System

The institute's innovative educational system derives from its mission objective to

"evolve a complete man". It is a system which fosters academic excellence, holistic development, high moral and spiritual values and social sensibilities. In accordance with these ideals, D.E.I. focuses on a comprehensive, integrated and inter-disciplinary education scheme, which affords the students an opportunity to get a first rate, broad-based education. The unique approach to education followed here enables the student to imbibe basic human values, a spirit of tolerance and respect for the religious faiths and beliefs of others. More importantly, D.E.I. believes that it should prepare its students for the service of mankind with devotion and dedication thereby combining the much sought excellence with the much needed relevance of the day.

A continuous evaluation system

The academic calendar year comprises two semesters. Student evaluation is on a continuous basis, designed primarily to make the learning process a regular and continuous task. Evaluation is through a process of class tests, quizzes, assign- ments, seminars and group discussions, distributed uniformly throughout the semester. This lessens the dependence on a single annual exam, an approach that encourages rote-learning. Importantly, regularity in classes is positively rewarded through appropriate weightage for class-attendance in the overall course grade.

The curriculum encompasses the following innovative features:

Visiting faculty from the University of Kiel, Germany, lectures on Quantum Computing

Visiting faculty from the University of Pittsburgh, U.S.A., lectures on Options Theory

Industry-Institute Interaction

The Institute has made noteworthy progress in furthering the cause of industry- institute collaboration. The Industry-Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC) of D.E.I. was established in 2002 with sponsorship from AICTE with a view to forge meaningful bonds with industry. The Cell, with a senior Professor as its Chief Coordinator and two Project Assistants, apart from providing consultancy and testing facilities to different industrial houses, helps organize short-term courses, seminars and lectures by eminent industry persons at the institute level. As a result of the endeav- ours of the IIPC, the quality and level of the student placements from the Institute has got a tremendous fillip in its short span of existence. In the future, it is envisaged that the IIPC will make bold strides in developing meaningful linkages with industry through mutually beneficial collaborations.

D.E.I. as others view it

"...I feel that this is really what your whole education system here is trying to achieve in terms of not only academic learning but values and also in terms of action in all three areas, viz. knowledge, skills and attitude which is what education is all about..."

Professor (Ms.) Armaity S. Desai, Chairperson UGC, Diamond Jubilee Memorial Lecture, May 1998

"D.E.I. has a curriculum which imparts a TOTAL learning experience. It imparts life values, leadership skills along with a rich academic flavour. It inspires its students to understand the value of integrity, humility and the need to be decent human beings as core skills in their journey through life — these are today becoming increasingly important and gaining recognition in both the corporate world as well as leading academic and other institutions around the world."

Mr. Avinash Singh, Executive Vice President, Birlasoft Inc.

"The ingrained philosophy of simple living and discipline in everyday life in Dayalbagh provides a perfect setting in which extremely talented D.E.I.

academic staff are shaping the future of the students and in fact, our nation.”

Mr. M. A. Pathan, Group Resident Director, Tata Group Former Chairman, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.

"...This Institute is a unique blend of education and work. They create an ambience which produces talented young persons who have developed themselves into 'perfect mind and body'. That is an important thing. They are doing it with no 'media show', very calmly with dedication. One day this Institute would become a role model for the entire nation..."

Professor Arun Nigavekar - Vice Chairman UGC, Convocation Address, January 2001

"...I am pleasantly surprised that you have been putting into action something that I have been longing for many years as an educationist. I could have never imagined that, in a University where technical education is imparted, the technical students would be doing manual work giving them the dignity of labour which we mouth only on occasions like this..."

Dr. S. Rame Gowda, Chairman, AICTE, Convocation Address, December 1996

"I was fortunate enough to have spent the formative years of my education at D.E.I. The foundations of personal integrity, discipline, commitment to work and the emphasis on the progress of the team vs the individual were laid during this period. These enduring values have been the cornerstone of my professional career in the industry."

Mr. Rajiv Sinha, Deputy Managing Director, DCM Shriram Consolidated Ltd.

Triangles, squares, hexagons, octagons... form the basic structures of design of space.

These are used independently or in any set of combinations to form unique and purposeful designs.

They allow for infinite, creative growth within disciplined structural systems.

Similarly, different elements of the Dayalbagh Educational Institute represented by these motifs, operate in conjunction under a unique and innovative educational system to achieve its mission objective "to evolve a complete man".
