Jamia Millia Islamia

An Overview 2012 - 2013

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is a university that has carved out its own distinctive place in the country’s academic scenario. This institution places a premium on innovative teaching and professional training since its inception in 1920. Over the years, Jamia has emerged as a seat of learning that not only underscores the cultural and religious diversity of India, but also contributes to evolving and sustaining the pluralism that marks the inclusive spirit of the country. It has inculcated a spirit of learning that blends tradition with modernity, humanism with liberalism, and nation building with professionalism. Jamia’s strength lies in its ability to cull from the past in order to address the present and forge the future.

Below is an overview of prominent landmarks in the period of Jamia’s Annual Report 2012 – 13.

ACADEMICS

Undergraduate semester system:

 All of JMI’s undergraduate programmes switched to the semester system from the academic session 2012 – 2013. Consequently, all under-graduate course syllabi were re-designed for the changeover.

 The post-graduate credit transfer system was also introduced across faculties, departments and centres. This allowed students to opt for courses across disciplines and faculties, adding diversity and flexibility to academic programmes. Jamia is one of the first institutions in the country to have introduced the credit transfer system at the post-graduate level.

Collaboration:

 JMI’s AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC) entered into a multi-pronged collaboration with the School of Media, Art and Design of the University Westminster, London, and York University, Toronto. MCRC is keen to start practice-based research which involves

‘experimentation’ with the help of faculty from both overseas institutions.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS Civil service entrance success

Participation in international/national events:

 Four student-scientists from the Centre for Theoretical Physics participated in a summer school at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Italy. The focus was on cosmology.

 National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers took part in the 15th All India National Integration Camp, Jodhpur, Rajasthan. To promote nationalism and brotherhood, they participated in all cultural activities, and secured first position in the group folk dance competition.

Sports:

 Dr. Aurangezeb Khurram Hafiz, Department of Physics, was National Champion in the National Bench-press Power Lifting Championships, at Jamshedpur, February 22 – 26, 2013. He secured the gold medal in the 120 kg weight class and became best lifter of the Championship with final lift of 225 kg.

It was flagged off by Veer Bhadra Singh, Chief Minister, Himachal Pradesh, on February 20 and received by Nita Chaudhury, Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, at JMI on February 27. 26 students (20 boys and 6 girls) and 13 staff members participated in the rally, covering 452 km through Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.
