Curriculum Vitae of Professor Ghulam Mohamad Shah

Professor Ghulam Mohamad Shah works at the Academy of International Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He has passed his Matriculation and Higher Secondary examinations under the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education in 1978 and 1980 respectively. He has received his higher education from1981 to 1982 at Govt. Amar Singh College Srinagar, which is presently nodal centre of Cluster University of Srinagar, Kashmir. He has joined the Post-Graduate Department of Geography and Regional Development, University of Kashmir in 1983 to pursue his Masters Degree in Geography and Regional Development. He has joined the Centre of Central Asian Studies, University of Kashmir in 1986 to pursue his M.Phil. & Ph.D. Programmes. He has worked as a Lecture in Geography at Govt. Women’s College, M.A. Road Srinagar for the brief academic session in 1990. He has worked as a Research Associate (Regional Geography) at the Centre of Central Asian Studies, University of Kashmir, Srinagar from December 1993 to May 1998.

In June 1998 Prof. G.M. Shah joined the Academy of Third World Studies (renamed as Academy of International Studies in 2011), Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, as an Assistant Professor and was subsequently appointed as an Associate Professor (Central Asian Studies) in October 2005. Prof. G.M. Shah is a Geographer by training. He is a specialist on Central Asian region and his fields of specialization include: Development Geography, Political Geography, Regional Geography of Central Asia and Social Science Research Methodology.

Dr Shah teaches five courses at Master’s level which include Political Geography and Geopolitics, Regional Geography of Central Asia, Development Strategies of Central Asia, Geo-Politics and Geo-Economics of Central Asia and Geo-Hazards and Natural Disaster Management. He also teaches two optional courses on Rural Area Development in the Third World, and Political Geography at the M. Phil level. He also teaches a compulsory course on Research Methodology at the Ph.D. level.

Two Ph.D. scholars and ten M. Phil scholars have already successfully completed their research work under the supervision of Professor G.M. Shah. Two Ph.D. scholars have submitted their theses and six more Ph.D. scholars are carrying their research work under the guidance of Prof. G.M. Shah. Two M. Phil./Ph.D. scholars are also pursuing their research under his supervision. Prof. G.M. Shah is a member of many national and international academic organizations. Besides making his presentations in 50 national and international seminars and conferences he has delivered many lectures on various contemporary themes in different academic institutions of the country.

Prof. G.M. Shah has taken the charge of Coordinator, UGC-Central Asia Programme at the Academy from August 2016.Besides his teaching and research work Prof Shah has organized more than one dozen national and international seminars/ conferences and panel discussions on Central Asia since he joined the Academy in June 1998. He has organized two national conferences on Kashmir in 2000 and 2008.In November 2013, he organised an international conference on Central Asia in collaboration with Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development, Chandigarh. In March 2016 he organized another international conference on Silk Route in collaboration with Centre of Central Asian Studies, Kashmir University Srinagar and Bedil International Foundation, New Delhi. Prof. G.M. Shah has organized monthly faculty lecture series at the Academy from 1999 to 2005. He has also acted as Student Advisor for the academic year 2015-16.

Shah is the author of three books which include The Global State published in 1997; Regional Planning for Integrated Area Development published in 2006 and Central Asia: Habitat, Society and Economy published in 2007. Prof. G.M. Shah has edited two books entitled, Towards Understanding the Kashmir Crisis (2002) and Central Asia: Post Cold War Geopolitics and Geoeconomics (2020).Prof. G.M Shah has completed two research reports which include Micro-Level Planning for Integrated Area Development :A Case Study of Tral Tehsil, Jammu and Kashmir, (2008) and Kashmir and Central Asia: Space Relationship and Socio-Economic Impact (2010). He has contributed chapters to many edited books on Central Asia. His three dozen papers of have been published in the proceedings of various national and international seminars /conferences on Central Asia. Prof. G.M. Shah has also written more than one dozen occasional papers. Prof. G.M. Shah has published many articles on Kashmir problem in various journals, edited books and news papers. Prof. G.M Shah has command on English, Urdu and Kashmiri languages. He has also the working knowledge of Persian and Arabic languages.
