"Every one of you should, tiom this very moment consider yourself a h e man or woman and even act as if you are free and no longer under the heel of this imperialism. This is no make believe. You have to cultivate this spirit of freedom before it comes physically. The chain of a slave are broken the moment he considers himself a tiee man."

-

Selections, by Nirrnal Kumar Bose, p. 208.

"The nations have progressed both by evolution and revolution. The one is necessary as the other. Death which is an eternal verity, is revolution as birth and after is slow and steady evolution Death is as necessary for man's growth as life itself. God is the greatest Revolutionist the world has ever known or will know. He sends deluges.

He sends storms'where a moment ago there was calm. He levels down mountains which he builds with exquisite care and infinite patience. I do watch the sky and it fills me with awe and wonder. In the serene blue sky, both of India and England, I have seen clouds gathering and bursting with a fury which has struck me dumb. History is more a record of wonderful revolutions than the so-called ordered progress

-

no history more so then the English. And I beg to inform the correspondent that I have seen people trudging slowly up mountains and have also seen men shooting up the air through great heights."

Was it for this that our people had behaved so gallantly for a year? Were all our brave words and deeds to end in this? The independence resolution of the Congress, the pledge of Jan '26, so often repeated? So I 'lay and pondered on that March night, and in my heard there was a great emptiness as of something precious gone, almost, beyond recall.

"This is the way the world ends Not with a bang, but a whimper."

"Have I-Still a goal? A haven towards'which my sail is set? A good wind? Ah, he only who Knoweth whither he saileth,. knoweth what is good, and a fair wind for him.

What still rernaineth o f me? A heart weary and flippant; an unstable will (;) fluttering wings; a broken back- bone.

This seeking for my home : 0 Zarathustra, dost thou know that this seeking hath been my home-sickening: it .eateth me up.

Where is my home? For it do I ask and seek and have sought but have not found it. 0 eternal everywhere. 0 eternal nowhere. 0 eternal- in vain.

Most of us suppose, have lost the old pagan feciing and not gained the new insight. Not for us to "have sigh1 of Proteus rising from Sea"; or "hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn." And very few of us are fortunate enough

-

"To see a world in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower.

Holy infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour."

Not for most of us, unhappily, to sense the mysterious life of Nature, to hear her whisper close to our ears, to thrill and quiver at her touch. Those days are gone. But though we may not see the sublime in Nature as we used to, we have sought to find in the glory and tragedy of humanity, in, its mighty dreams and inner tempests, its pangs and failures, its conflicts and misery, and over all this, its faith in a great destiny and a realization of those dreams. That has been some recompense for us for all the heart-breaks that such a search involves, and often we have been raised above the pettiness b f life. The many have not undertaken this search and having cut themselves adrift from the ancient ways tind no road to follow in the present. They neither dream nor do they act. They have not understanding of human convulsions like the great French ~ e v o l u d o n or the Russian Revolution. The complex swift, and cruel eruptions of human desires, long suppressed, freight : them. For them the Bastille has not yet fallen."
