THE ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY

The Aligarh Muslim University has witnessed vast information in organizational size and complexity. This is evident in the expansion in student enrolment, staff strength, administrative and teaching departments, research centres and institutes and research outputs. Correspondingly the university has grown in stature, establishing and international reputation as an institution of excellence in teaching and research.

The university, a century old institution has 11 faculties and 80 departments of study with strength of 24000 students from all over India and 30 countries. Its residential character makes it unique institution.

The university's Maulana Azad Library has an excellent collection of books, monographs and journals in multidiscipline. This library contains valuable and unique research materials. Computing facilities are available at the university computer centers and department's computer clusters. In addition, to this, this institution has best Engineering and Medical colleges and center for Remote Sensing. Its Film Club, Drama Club and Music Club provide for all round personality development of students.

The University continues to emphasis and maintain high standards in teaching. Its curriculum is designed to not only facilitate participative learning of the fundamentals ,but also inculcate intellectual curiosity , creativity, critical thinking and analytical and problem solving skills. It aims to produce well rounded, professionally competent graduates who seek to stay abreast of advances in knowledge through both self study as well as the University's various continuing education and post graduates programmers, of Master of Social Work(MSW) is one.

THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK

The Department of Social Work at the Aligarh Muslim University has been providing instructions at undergraduate and post-graduate levels since 1967 and research programmes leading to Ph.D. since 1971. Since its humble beginnings, the Department has come a long way with its current strength of 15 faculty, representing a broad range of teaching and research expertise, and a large number of students, it ranks as one of the best departments. It has kept pace with developments taking place in the discipline in India and the region. This is evident in the research and publications of staff members as well as its students.

More than ever before, both private and public sector organizations are facing an increasingly complex and challenging environment. Under such conditions, their survival and growth depend on the capacity to gather, analyse and disseminate information as well as utilize such information to formulate, implement and evaluate policies. This points to the need for a post graduate programme to train specialists who will put their knowledge to effective use.

In 1994, the Master of Social Work (MSW) programme was added to this department to meet the growing need of trained professionals to provide welfare and development services as well as Human Resource Management services. Today the Department offers Doctoral Programme in Social Work Two year Full Time Masters Programme in Social Work Three year Bachelor Programme in Social Work admission to the two year Post graduate course in Social Work is open to Graduates to any stream. The selection follows a systematic admission procedure consisting of written test, group discussion and personal interview.

The teaching methodology comprises of class room instructions, field work, seminars, group discussion and skill development workshops. The good mix of students, together with a competent and committed faculty supplemented by practitioners in the field, has given rise to lively exchanges of experiences in the seminar room. The synergy generated has made the learning experience a meaningful and exciting one.

Students come to the Department of Sociology and Social Work for various reasons because they are interested in teaching or social service, because the course offers myriad job opportunities or because they wish to contribute to community life. Most importantly, however, they come because they know that they are getting the education of a lifetime.

Today, the Department proudly displays a number of top quality publication including books, research articles and papers presented at seminars, conference and workshops.

The students are encouraged to analyse services in the rural areas to inculcate

organizational and leadership skills, generate sensitivity towards rural community and

provide an experience in group living. Social Work students share their diverse

experiences by publishing a quarterly newsletter namely Voice of Social Work.

To teach skills in understanding cultural, societal and organizational dynamics and in evaluating policies.

To train the students to meet the development needs of all sections of society with particular emphasis on vulnerable sections.

To acquire an understanding of the tools & techniques of Modern Management To improve their skills in solving complex organisational problems

To foster a positive attitude towards the organisation and the society To develop competence in resolving interpersonal conflicts.

To inculcate professional ethics so as to become enlightened and conscientious managers in business and other social sector of the economy.

MODE OF LEARNING

The master of social work programme has been planned with a view to empower the professionals in knowledge, skills & attitude to be able to undertake promotive, preventive, therapeutic managerial and administrative intervention with individual, families, groups, communities and corporate sector etc. The mode of learning compromises:

Orientation Programme:

One Week Orientation Programme is planned for MSW students before the commencement of regular teaching and field work intervention. The major objective of the programme is to familiarize the student with the new course curriculum, environment, field work agencies and various operations. The students are given exposure to self awareness through discussion and presentation with the aid of multimedia devices.

Tutorials, Assignments and Group Discussions:

The students are required to prepare assignments on various topics and make group discussions on them regularly. The analysis of topic helps in integrating various views to holistic understanding of the subject.

Weekly Seminar Presentations:

The students are required to make audio-visual presentations on the topics assigned to them by their respective supervisors. These presentations are based on field work experiences and made before the class and the concern faculty. The active participation of students enables them to develop communication skills, articulation of presenting the things scientifically & systematically.

Overall it develops their level of confidence and understanding of subject matter and field work interventions.

Areas of Activities:

The MSW students develop skill expertise in: Case work and supportive counselling Development of Group Work interventions for children and adolescents. Family intervention including Parental Guidance & Counselling.

Participatory Learning Appraisal with people in the community to their problems and concerns.

Focus Group Discussion, Participatory Learning Appraisal (PLA) Technique (Making Resource Map, Time Line, Chapati Diagram & Seasonality Diagram)

Planning Supportive Services In Schools for children with educational problems. Analysis School systems & Processes to Design Health Programme.

Organization of workshop for teachers on Learning & Behavioural Problem of Children. Participation in National Pulse Polio Programme & sensitizing and mobilizing the people for immunization of their children.

Reproductive & Child Health Counselling & Service delivery.

Active participation in industrial unit in the discipline of Human Resource Management & Industrial relations.

FIELD WORK PRACTICUM

Field work is an integral part of the Master of Social Work Programme. The training provides an opportunity for a critical appreciation of various social work practices by integrating with field work.

The students are placed in different selected organizations. In the final year the students are placed to agencies which correspond to their area of specialization.

A student on an average nearly puts sixteen hours for concurrent field work in a week. The field work is closely supervised by both the faculty and agency supervisors. Every week students make seminar presentation on their field experiences. Each student has an interaction with the concerned supervisor.

The field work practicum compulsory winter camp (Rural/Urban) of 8-10 days duration at the end of first third semesters.

Further at the end of second and fourth semesters. Students are placed for 6-8 weeks Block field work/ summer training in reputed organizations. The degree is awarded after the successful completion of the Block Field Work/Summer Training and submission of Project Report personally.

The two years (4 Semesters) Master of Social Work Programme enables the social work students to invest a minimum of 1508 hours as a part of its Field Work Curriculum and enrich their knowledge and develop skills in various social work methodologies. The practicum is illustrated below

TRAINING EXPOSURE

UNICEF & NRHM

AMU MSW Students is known as one of the finest trained Social Work Students in the Country. The Department runs various National and International Projects with full participation of MSW students.

Supportive Supervision of Comprehensive Child Survival Program (SS-CCSP) a UNICEF and NRHM Sponsored project where MSW students make their participation with full potential and also receive Ten days full time training by UNICEF India trainers. They learn and work on various grass root level Skills and techniques about home based care of child survival which are very essential for neonatal And supporting the ashas known as Rural Social Health Activist. Impact assessment of institutional V/s home delivery and traditional child care practices are the two components of this training .MSW Students are equally participated in this training

GLOBAL MEET

AMU MSW student have a unique global exposure with multidimensional fields. In every semester MSW student have an interaction with the students of western universities .They share their works, ideas, thoughts with foreign students and they also share their experiences with AMU MSW students.

The western students also participated in the field work activities in actual rural setting along with that, they also acquaint with Indian culture and give effective feedback of our work.
