<Founder’s Message>

The purpose of education has always been to enable a man to develop his intellectual powers to the full so that he may grasp the significance of any situation that arises, that he may know the difference between right and wrong and gain the ability to contemplate the divine mysteries of nature. Education should strengthen his character, help him to look after himself and concentrate on the life to come.

<Message from the Chairman>

Prof. Mohammad Ubaidullah Bokhari Chairman

Department of Computer Science

Computer Science is about learning and understanding the scientific principles underlying every kind of computing system. The foremost challenges that are directly addressed by computer science as a discipline include health informatics, secure cyberspace, enhance virtual reality, reverse-engineering the brain and tools of scientific discovery. The problems we tackle as computer scientists are increasingly inspired by big issues facing society: better education, better health care, better democracy, and better infrastructure for society’s lifelines in energy, water and transportation. It is truly an exciting time to be a computer scientist or engineer!

The Department of Computer Science, Aligarh Muslim University facilitates students to acquire specialized scientific knowledge to solve the real world problems and to provide leadership in the field of computer science. Our graduates go on to careers in many fields that need an understanding of computer systems, what they can (and cannot) do, and how to design them, from computer manufacturers and software firms to management consultancy, finance or teaching.

Our curriculum covers a lot of ground, including theoretical computer science, computer architecture and networking, databases, computer graphics, programming languages, software engineering, and much more. To do all this requires a critical mass of talent, drive and place. It is my intense pleasure to introduce you to that place: Aligarh Muslim University’s Department of Computer Science.

I welcome this opportunity to invite the prospective employers to our department. Please go through the brochure for our track record and achievements. If you haven’t already, please plan to visit us in person to see for yourself the exciting confluence of bright minds, a historical place and wonderful teachers.

<Message from the Training and Placement Officer>

“Success in business requires training and discipline and hard work. But if you’re not frightened by these things, the opportunities are just as great today as they ever were.”

— David Rockefeller (1915 –, American banker) This is an era of technological innovation and no other discipline is much more on the forefront than the Computer Science. From consumer products to business services, the creations of computer scientists are both visible and desired.

Such a huge enterprise requires sharp and creative professionals in the discipline.

The Department of Computer Science at Aligarh Muslim University is a prestigious institution with a wealth of dedicated students and expert faculty members cultivating a great learning environment. Our academic theories and laboratory projects provide ample exposure and strike precise balance of theory and practice. We emphasize on the process of shared and interactive learning which fosters strong partnerships, sparks social participation and makes the education an overall pleasant experience.

Our students engage themselves in live presentations, real world case studies and industrial tours, seminars and conferences and are extremely familiar with the cutting-edge of computing practices and technology. We are confident that they would prove to be valuable assets to whatever organizations they become a part of.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those organizations that have shown a keen interest in the placement drive for the students. I am humbled by your active cooperation and look forward to your visit to the department.

In case of any clarification, please do revert back to me.

Dr. Tamanna Siddiqui Associate Professor &

<About Aligarh Muslim University>

The establishment of Mohammedan Anglo Oriental (MAO) College in 1875 marks one of the most important events in the educational and social history of modern India. “An epoch in the social progress of India.” – said Lord Lytton as he laid the foundation stone of the MAO College on January 8, 1877. Nearly eight years later, when the noted orientalist Sir Hamilton Gibb characterized this college as the first modernist institution in Islam.

The MAO College was originally affiliated with Calcutta University and was transferred to the Allahabad University in 1885. In 1920, the Act of Indian Legislative Council elevated the MAO College to the status of a central university and it became the principal Muslim institution in India. Section 2(1) of the AMU Act terms the university as the educational institution of their choice established by the Muslims of India.

THE PRESENT SCENARIO

At present, the university now boasts almost 30,000 students, 1,400 teachers and 6,000 non- teaching staff on its roll. It has 12 faculties comprising a wide spectrum of academic disciplines, 95 departments and 13 centers. It offers about 325 courses. Besides this, the university has expanded by setting up 5 regional centers at Mallapuram (Kerala), Murshidabad (West Bengal), Kishanganj (Bihar) and Pune (Maharashtra).

(7)

Special efforts have been made to improve the research facilities in order to encourage students to enrol themselves in various Ph. D. programmes. Currently, more than 1,500 research students are pursuing the cutting-edge of their disciplines. As a result, AMU has been ranked amongst the top 10 universities in scientific research publications.

MAULANA AZAD LIBRARY

The prestigious Maulana Azad Library consists of more than 1.1 million books on a diverse range of subjects. It also houses reports, conference souvenirs, periodicals and digital content on CDs and DVDs. More than 5000 students, teachers and other members of the university visit the library daily and utilize its resources. Besides this, each department has its own Seminar Library to cater the specific needs of its respective disciplines of interest.

GAMES

The sports activities of AMU have brought acclaim from all corners of the country and beyond. Ghaus Mohammad in Tennis;

Mushtaq Ali, Lala Amarnath, Wazir Ali and Nazir Ali in Cricket; Hamid and Mazhar, the Olympians at Athletics and Shakoor in Hockey are the names that will always bring pride to the institution. AMU has a century-old Riding Club where the members have won various prizes in the national level competitions.

CULTURAL AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The General Education Center (GEC) is the nucleus for the most of the extra-curricular activities and caters to the cultural environment. It is the base of several interest-focussed clubs like Drama Club, Film Club, Debate Club, Eco Club, etc. which motivate students in social, cultural and environmental issues. A large number of National and International events and programmes are regularly organized by the Center.

<About the Department of Computer Science>

The Department of Computer Science of AMU came into the existence in the year 1971 with the installation of IBM1130 Computing System, under the umbrella of Computer Center and later blossomed into an independent department known as the "Department of Computer Science" in the year 1988.

In the year 1980, VAX11/780 system was purchased from DEC (USA) and installed at the centre, which is one of the first computing systems in India. The approval of two new courses, a three year programme of Master in Computer Application (MCA) and one year programme of Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA) by the standing committee of the UGC in the year 1982 and the formal introduction of these courses from the session 1983-84, were one of the major landmarks in the development of Computer Science department.

The syllabi for the courses is designed by keeping under consideration the requirement of time as well as the demand of the IT industry. But any department is known by its research work, therefore in the year 2009, Department of Computer Science yet again witnessed a major breakthrough with the introduction of Research Programme in order to provide an opportunity to the young and enthusiastic IT professional to make vital contribution towards the ongoing IT research and development.

The guidance and cooperation of the experienced and expert faculty of the department is one of its attracting features which enlivens the students to stretch their wings, so that they can fly higher than their dreams and serve the country.

Students from both undergraduate and postgraduate courses have been able to secure a place in the industry even before the completion of their final examinations. The rigorous training of 4 to 6 month, in the leading IT companies and reputed organizations of the country, in the last year of the BCA and MCA courses is the major force behind this unparalleled placement hub of the university. There are plethora of companies which visits the department every year for the recruitment of the students, like TCS, ThoughtWorks, Infosys, IBM, JK Technosoft, HCL, Info system, NIC, Wipro, Bharti Telesoft, and many more.
