Public Lecture on Development, Displacement and Human Rights Concerns

On occasion of its golden jubilee year, the Department organized a public lecture on the theme,

“Development, Displacement and Human Rights Concerns” on January 31, 2017. Eminent Social Worker, Ms. Medha Patkar delivered the lecture that witnessed the participation of nearly 600 people who were drawn from the NGO sector, Schools of Social Work, alumni of the department, faculty and students from the university. The event was also graced by the presence of the Honorable Vice Chancellor, Senior Officials, Deans, Heads and Directors of the Centres of the university.

(140)

Lecture began with the welcome address of Head of Department, Prof Ushvinder Kaur Popli, who gave the holistic introduction to the journey of department in the last 50 years. Ms. Medha Patkar began her lecture by acknowledging the long association of the student fraternity of the university with various movements across the country. It was mentioned by her that development is inevitable but it should happen while ensuring equity and social justice, which are also the ideals of the Constitution and the various international conventions to which India is a signatory to. Any developmental project should visualize the consequences on the population and hence the preparedness of the affected population should happen years before.

The case of Narmada Bachao Andolan was cited by her and mentioned the role that they had played in preparing the younger generation for the transitions that might occur in their life.

The impact of developmental projects on the livelihood and the culture has to be understood.

Citing the example of the fishing community, Ms. Medha Patkar stressed that the loss of livelihood may happen through the introduction of trawlers which has to be thought about and addressed in a proactive manner. Another impact is on the landless population and marginalized sections as they are usually omitted from the rehabilitation planning.

She reiterated that the students of social work need to look at the realities of the marginalized communities and should make an utmost attempt to work at the grass root level. They should aspire to become non-violent change agents with the support of the government.

(141)

The lecture was coordinated by Prof Ushvinder Kaur Popli, Dr Habeeb-ul Rahiman and Mr Sanjay Ingole.

PUBLIC LECTURES

Title: Epistemology of Social Exclusion, Speaker: Prof. Vivek Kumar

The Second Public Lecture under the aegis of Golden Jubilee Celebrations by the Department was held on 19th April 2017 in Mir Anees Hall, Dayar-e Mir Taqi Mir, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Eminent Sociologist Prof Vivek Kumar, Chair Professor, Dr Ambedkar Chair, Centre for the Study of Social Systems/School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Visiting Professor, Columbia University, New York, USA and Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany, delivered the lecture on “Epistemology of social exclusion”.

Prof. Kumar explained the meaning of ‘Exclusion’ and the meaning of ‘Social Exclusion’ and its reasons. After defining its literal meaning he analyzed how social exclusion is differently perceived and defined in India and Western world. The citation of Louis Dumont was made to explain the difference between Indian and Western society. Further he explained the source and foundation of ‘Social Exclusion’ in Indian society which is socially stratified, culturally heterogeneous, religiously plural, and hierarchical. The location of social exclusion also provides the paradigm of exclusion and inclusion because it is an established notion that the paradigm of exclusion is social and inclusion is constitutional. Therefore, there is always bound to be a lag between exclusion and inclusion. He argued that when we try to make a policy on social exclusion its contextualization, source and foundation and

(142)

its structures are sine-qua-non. If one can understand the nuances of social exclusion then a policy of social Inclusion could be made.

Prof. Ushvinder Kaur Popli, Head of the Department made the introductory remarks while Prof. Anjali Gandhi, (Retd.) chaired the session and coordinated the discussion. She was also felicitated by Prof. Vivek Kumar for her contribution to the Department of Social Work, Jamia Millia Islamia. Mr. Sanjay Ingole and Dr. Habeebul Rahiman, Assistant Professors and Convenors of the lecture, introduced the speakers and delivered vote of thanks respectively.

Title: The Role of Corporate in Transforming Rural India, Speaker: Ms Neelima Khetan

The third public lecture under the aegis of it Golden Jubilee Celebrations was organized on 15th November 2017 at FTK CIT Auditorium. Ms. Neelima Khetan, Vice President-CSR,

(143)

Hindustan Zinc Ltd. delivered lecture on ‘The Role of Corporate in Transforming Rural India’.

Kohli, the former Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and former Head Department of Social Work, chaired the session.

Ms. Neelima Khetan, started her lecture by differentiating between the term transformation and development. Speaking on the topic, she emphasized on the point that when one looks at market solutions to all the social problems, it may not succeed. One has to look into all the three levels, i.e., Bazar, Sarkar and Samaj. The corporate, though assumes important role in rural transformation, has its own limitations as well and being educated people, the academic community has to be alert about which direction we are heading. In her lecture, she urged the younger generation to go deeper into the issue and make the world a better one and make their existence more justified.
