Geo-enabled census for lions

Forest officials are conducting a census of lions at the Gir forest national park and wildlife sanctuary in Rajkot. According to Sandeep Kumar, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) at the national park, preparations for the census have been going on for the past nine months and lions are being closely monitored in their habitat.

Scientific mapping tools like GIS and GPS are being used in this year's census taking into account the large area of their habitat. GPS will be used to track the exact location of the lions and to know the composition of the land where lions are located during the census period. This data will be plotted on a GIS map.

GeoImaging Tools for ArcGIS™. GeoImaging Tools offer accurate and highly automated tools for correcting raw satellite imagery, and is revolutionising the integration of remotely sensed imagery into GIS workflows. GeoImaging Tools Image Correction Module will enable ArcGIS users to access 70+ commercial optical, radar and aerial sensors in their GIS workflows.

Users will be able to use sensor model information to perform registrations, optionally with automatic GCPs and tie points from reference data such as chip databases, reference mosaics, or vectors. Higher levels of registration accuracy are achievable via block bundle adjustments. Users will be able to save the correction parameters into the ArcGIS RPDef format.

Commenting on the achievement, Jill Smith, CEO of DigitalGlobe said, “The unrivaled quality and quantity contained in DigitalGlobe’s image library is what allows us to deliver the imagery our customers need when they need it. The power of our industry-leading constellation enables us to persistently break new ground for the industry and we strive to offer

our customers the largest collection of accurate, current satellite imagery available.”

DigitalGlobe’s satellites including WorldView-1, QuickBird and recently launched WorldView-2 combine to form the industry’s largest satellite constellation. These satellites coupled with DigitalGlobe's aerial network enable the company to offer the highest collection capacity of high-resolution earth imagery to customers around the world, adding roughly 1.5 million sq km of imagery every day or three times the Earth's landmass annually.

Digital maps to ride on cell phones in India

According to Navteq, cell phones will drive digital maps usage in India, as mobile handset usage is growing at an alarming rate in the country. According to Richard E Shuman, Navteq Senior Vice President (Sales - Asia Pacific),

“About 100 million handsets are sold annually in India and 3-4 per cent of these are smart phones or GPS-enabled, which support digital maps. So, while the auto sector drove adoption of digital navigation in the US, mobile phones will do the same for India.” Richard said, “Digital mapping solutions are still at a nascent stage. But as people start using the product, it will change the way they navigate.”

ESRI sees huge opportunity in India

“Our business model worldwide is to work in core sectors. In India also we have the same model and in future we will work with our partners in developing those sectors.

All states are coming up with big power and telecom projects and GIS can help in locating those areas.”

In India GIS can help in many challenging areas such as locating coal mines and

defence force resources. To discuss the potential usage of GIS in India Dangermond had also expressed plans to meet the Prime Minister,

Mr Manmohan Singh. He said,

“The agenda would be on the vision on national GIS. What is now emerging is the GIS going to the Web, which allows us to have multiple factors like maps and other things in an organised manner.”
