1901क जनगणना के अंतगत व भ जा तय म ऊंच-नीच का म जानने का यास कया गया। इसम2378 मुख जा तय क पहचान क गई। इनम से अहीर जा त क 1700 उपजा तयां तथा ा ण जा त क 639उपजा तयां पाई ग ।1931 क जनगणना के अनुसार भारतीय समाज म कुल2993जा तयां थी। सन्1931के बाद पहली बार2011म जा त के आधार पर जनगणना करवाई गई। सन्1931के प ात वशेषता महा मा गांधी के वरोध के कारण भारत म जा त के आधार पर जनगणना
बंद कर द गई। 2001क जनगणना तवेदन म भी व भ धम के अनुया यय क जनसं या के अ त र चार े णय - सामा य,अ य पछड़े वग, अनुसू चत जा तय तथा अनुसू चत जनजा तय संबंधी आंकड़े उपल ह। हटन के अनुसार भारत म 3000से अ धक जा तयां पाई जाती ह। उनका कथन है क भारतीय जा त व ा का अ ययन करना हो तो वशेष क एक सेना चा हए।

2. Read the following passage and answer the questions given at the end of the passage- Under the 1901 census, an attempt was made to know the hierarchy of castes in different castes. In this, 2378 major castes were identified. Out of these, 1700 sub-castes of Ahir caste and 639 sub-castes of Brahmin caste were found. According to the 1931 census, there were a total of 2993 castes in the Indian society. For the first time after 1931, the census was conducted on the basis of caste in 2011. After 1931, due to the opposition of Mahatma Gandhi, the census
on the basis of caste was stopped in India. In the Census Report of 2001 also, apart from the population of followers of different religions, data on four categories - General, Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are available. According to Hutton, there are more than 3000 castes in India. He says that if Indian caste system is to be studied then an army of experts is needed.
